  7. Most of our lives have been, or will be, touched by
  8. cancer. But there are positive measures we can take to
  9. prevent or survive this disease. More than 120,000
  10. new cases of cancer are diagnosed in Canada annually.
  11. As the second leading cause of death after heart
  12. disease, cancer claims the lives of about 61,000
  13. Canadians each year.
  14.     Although that translates into one death from
  15. cancer every ten minutes, there is reason for
  16. optimism. Significant advances in the prevention,
  17. early detection and treatment of several cancers have
  18. enabled half of all patients with cancer to survive. Many
  19. Canadians alive today with a history of cancer can attest to recent successes.
